Shikhar Dhawan makes a shocking announcement of retirement
India’s flamboyant southpaw Shikhar Dhawan shocked everyone when he pulled a prank about his retirement, not from the game but from part time bowling.
Dhawan in the second T20 against Sri Lanka played a blitzkrieg 25 ball 51 runs that enabled the hosts to script a massive 69 runs victory to equal the three-match series in Ranchi, on Friday with the final encounter to be played in port city Vizag, Vishakhapattanam.
After miserably failing at Pune’s “English” wicket, Dhawan along with his opening partner Rohit Sharma (43) provided India a superb start that powered the hosts to 196, after being caught behind wicket while playing a uppercut.
Chasing the massive total on a dead pitch with an asking rate of 9.80 runs per over, Sri Lanka suffered hiccups in the start losing veteran Tillakaratne Dilshan for a duck, thanks to Ravichandran Ashwin and skipper MS Dhoni’s lighting fast keeping behind the wicket. The visitors lost their top order even before took off.
Dhawan earned the Man of the match for his entertaining innings which also saw him score his maiden T20 fifty.
“I was hitting the ball well. I like to play my natural game. I got a lot of support from the captain and the coaching staff. We didn’t have any specific plan to hit 70 in the first six. Once I started connecting the ball well, it all came together,” he said during the post-match presentation.
Ahead of the ICC World T20 Gavaskar was quizzed if the Indian team would miss Dhawan’s bowling after the latter’s bowling action was warned by ICC during the South Africa series.
Dhawan then came on the floor and made the announcement in his style, “I want to inform all my fans and make it official that I will be retiring (with a long pause)… from bowling in international and domestic cricket.”
Indian fans were almost shocked when Dhawan paused and heaved a sigh of relief after he completes his full statement.
Ahead of Asian Cup and ICC World T20, India will bank on Dhawan heavily for a good start and it has also been how important to get a good start to score a big total.
India will take on Sri Lanka for the third and final T20 on Sunday in Vishkhapattanm.
