The latest back pain suffered by Shreyas Iyer could reportedly rule him out of the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia. The series will get underway later this month after the ongoing Test series comes to an end on Monday (March 13).
The right-handed batsman did not come out to bat in India’s first innings after complaining about pain in his lower back following the conclusion of the third day of the Test on Saturday. On Sunday morning, he was taken to the hospital for scans.
“Shreyas Iyer complained of pain in his lower back following the third day’s play. He has gone for scans and the BCCI Medical Team is monitoring him,” the BCCI statement on Sunday morning read.
He is unlikely to take the field in the remainder of the Test. And according to Cricbuzz, he is also looking highly doubtful for the ODI series. The three-match series is scheduled to get underway in Mumbai on March 17.
Shreyas Iyer’s injury concern:
While Shreyas Iyer is likely to miss the ODIs, there are also doubts over his participation in the subsequent Indian Premier League due to the recurring back issue. As per the report, a final decision on his participation in the IPL will be taken after further tests are done.
The report further stated that the results of the scans are not encouraging and the right-handed batsman will have to be shown to a specialist and will need to undergo further tests. The selectors have already been informed about the issue and they will take a call soon.
The 29-year old started experiencing the pain on Saturday evening when he decided to go for a knock after stumps on Day 3. The report quoted sources as saying that the pain was so severe that the batsman could not have batted on Sunday even if the situation demanded.
Earlier this year, Iyer missed the ODI series against New Zealand and the first Test against Australia due to a back pain. The batsman will be hoping to recover soon and get ready for the upcoming season of the IPL.
