Shubman Gill is a promising young talent among the Kolkata Knight Riders ranks. The right-handed batsman, who made a name for himself in the U-19 World Cup in 2018, played some memorable innings last year in the IPL and is now expected to play a huge role in KKR’s campaign this year. Cricketing experts claim him to be the next big superstar from India, and the youngster certainly has a lot of pressure on himself to justify the tag.
Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Dinesh Karthik is optimistic that Shubman Gill will exceed all expectations in the current IPL edition. His remarks comes just a day before KKR’s opening game of the ongoing season of IPL against Mumbai Indians.

21-year-old opener Shubman Gill from Punjab has been constantly praised by experts after important contributions in India U19 side’s world cup win in 2018. He was acquired by KKR in 2018 and turned in useful contributions for them in his debut season and 2019. He has scored 499 runs from 27 matches averaging 33.26.
He was retained by the KKR team management who saw immense batting potential in him and even encouraged him to be a part of their core leadership group. He made his ODI debut for India in New Zealand in 2019 and is expected to perform well in future.
“Shubman is a quality player. There is a lot of expectation from him around the world, I’m sure he will exceed all expectations and I’m really confident about that,” Karthik said in a virtual interaction ahead of clash against Mumbai Indians.
Shubman Gill got limited opportunity to showcase his talents in the last edition as his batting position was constantly tempered with but this time KKR coach Brendon McCullum has already given him the opener’s slot.

Dinesh Karthik further announced that it will be West Indian off-spinner Sunil Narine who will be opening the batting alongside him for KKR and the KKR skipper believes it is a perfect combination.
“No complicated batting by Sunil Narine makes it easy for us. It’s a very unique opening pair,” he said.
“One of the tough points for KKR at this point of time is picking the right XI. A lot of guys have put their hands up and are ready for selection. It’s going to be an interesting one and a tough one but that’s a good sign,” Karthik added.
“We are in a good space. One of our strengths is the variety we have in our pace department. All four Indian pacers are shaping up really well. It’s going to be a hard decision to make who’s going to start the tournament,” he signed off.
While Shubman Gill scored more than 200 runs averaging more than 30 in both 2018 and 2019, Sunil Narine is one of the mainstays of KKR’s bowling attack since 2012. But of late since 2017, Sunil Narine’s batting exploits have come to the forefront more than his bowling. He opens as a pinch hitter since 2017 and has a strike rate of 168.34. He has scored 771 runs and taken the maximum wickets 122 in 110 IPL matches.
