Former New Zealand cricketer, Richard Hadlee will undergo surgery following the diagnosis of second cancer in his liver.

An NZC statement said it is still at a “very early stage”. The former Blackcaps skipper got diagnosed with bowel cancer last month.

He underwent a surgery to have his tumour removed. His wife had told the press the disease is operable, as it is still in a very early stage. She said,

“As with the first statement released on this matter, we disclose these details solely in the interests of transparency, and to avoid speculation and gossip. We would again ask that people respect our request for privacy.”

The Herald spoke to a colorectal surgeon who said the chances of a full recovery were high if:

1. The secondary cancer was detected early.
2. There were a relatively limited number of growths.
3. The strain of the disease was not overly aggressive.

“Medical advice is that it’s still at a very early stage and is operable,” the release, issued on behalf of Hadlee’s wife read. “Once he has recovered from the operation, Richard will undergo further chemotherapy treatment.

The 67-year old is New Zealand’s all-time great fast bowler. He once held the record for most Test wickets- 431. The cricketer scored 3124 runs in 86 Tests, showcasing his prowess with the bat too. Hadlee had the natural all-around ability and helped the Kiwis win big games as well.

The all-rounder also scored 1751 runs and scalped 158 wickets in 115 ODIs. He hung up his boots in 1990 and is still known as one of the greatest cricketers to have graced the game.

Richard Hadlee is currently at the eight spot on the list of all-time highest wicket-takers in Test cricket. Cricket fans from all around the world have raised their concern and provided vocal support to the former great.
