Sri Lanka batsman and former skipper Kumar Sangakkara joined Graham Gooch as the only batsmen in the history of Test cricket to make a triple century and century in the same Test before Sri Lanka set Bangladesh a target of 467 to win the second Test in Chittagong.

Sangakkara made 105 in Sri Lanka‘s second innings to add to his first-innings 319, thus becoming only the fourth player to score 400 runs in a Test match.

Sangakkara joined Graham Gooch (456 run), Mark Taylor (426 run) and Brian Lara (400 run) as the only players to score 400 in a Test match.

Former England skipper Graham Gooch scored a massive 456 run against India at Lord’s in July 1990. Gooch scored 333 in the first innings followed by 123 in the second innings of England. England won that Test match by 247 runs.

Mark Taylor, former Australian skipper, achieved this unique feat against Pakistan in Peshawar in 1998. Taylor scored 334 runs in the first innings followed by 92 runs on the second innings of Australia. The Test match eventually ended in a draw.

The third instance where a batsman scored 400 runs in one Test match was Brian Lara amassing 400 runs against England at Antigua 2004. His 400 not out is the only innings in history of Test cricket where batsman scored a quadruple century. The Test match, though, ended in a draw.

Here is the list of players who scored 400 runs in a Test match:

4. Brian Lara (WI) – 400

3. Kumar Sangakkara (SL) – 424

2. Mark Taylor (AUS) – 426

1. Graham Gooch (ENG) – 456
