Sourav Ganguly Backs India to Host Pink Ball Tests

So far, the responses garnered by games played with the pink ball have evoked an overwhelming response. The recent instance of England playing a Test under lights against the West Indies at Birmingham was witnessed by a packed house, as fans were enthralled to see the latest innovation in the sport.

Barely a month later, Sri Lanka are set to play their first ever day and night Test, when they take on Pakistan in UAE. The fact remains that almost all cricket boards have whole heartedly acknowledged the fact that if Test cricket is to survive and boom, Pink Ball Tests are a must as they serve as a clear medium for fans to visit the stadiums at convenient hours.

India and BCCI, however, have been rather reluctant to try the concept, as the world’s richest cricketing body is yet to schedule a game for the side under lights. Backing India to use the pink ball, was former skipper and chairman of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), Sourav Ganguly.

“It’s not about me being a fan of the pink ball,” Ganguly said when asked about his view of the concept. “The idea is to bring back crowds to Test cricket, and that’s the reason the Duleep Trophy is being played under lights and with the pink ball.”

“The first pink-ball Test in 2015 between Australia and New Zealand in Adelaide was house full. The recent Birmingham Test contested by England and West Indies drew big crowds too. So as an administrator, I would like to see packed houses for Test cricket,” he added.

Ganguly also spoke about the decision to reinstate the Duleep Trophy and not randomly disown it, as initially done by the BCCI.

“As far as Duleep Trophy is concerned, my view is very clear: How can you kill a tournament? It has to be discussed either in the working committee or the special AGM,” Ganguly said.“You can’t chuck away a tournament one fine morning. I do understand the packed calendar, but somehow we have found a window for this, and we have to keep on trying to keep it significant.”
