Sourav Ganguly hugs Sachin Tendulkar after first Test match against West Indies at Kolkata
It was a very emotional moment for Indian fans at the presentation ceremony of the first Test match held between India and West Indies at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Sachin Tendulkar was felicitated (and hugged) by his former India skipper and fellow ODI opener Sourav Ganguly for a long time. The other digniteries present at the ceremony along with Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly were the likes of Mamta Banerjee – Chief Minister of West Bengal and Jagmohan Dalmiya – president of CAB (Cricket Association of Bengal). Former India player Ravi Shastri moderated the presentation ceremony.
India routed West Indies by an innings and 51 runs, to take 1-0 lead in two match Test series in Kolkata on Friday. Main architect for India’s comprehensive win were Rohit Sharma, who put in a man of the match performance with 177 runs, Mohammed Shami, who took 9/188, Ravichandran Ashwin, who took 5/98 and scored 124. This is for the first time that India, in its 81-year history, have won five Test matches in a row. Earlier in the year, India whitewashed Australia 4-0. The key, though, is to mention that all five Test matches were at home.
Sachin Tendulkar, though, didn’t contribute much to India’s win in Kolkata. India’s Little Master was adjuged LBW in dubious circumstances of the bowling off Shane Shillingford for just 10 runs when he misread a doosra from Caribbean off-spinner. Replays suggested ball would have missed the stupms as it hit Sachin high on his thighs. Nigel Llong, English umpire from Kent, was the one who adjudicated the decision. This was the only contribution from Sachin Tendulkar in his 199th Test as India didn’t bat for the second time in a match. Sachin Tendulkar, however, didn’t disaapoint his fans as he took one wicket while bowling in India’s first innings. Shane Shillingford, who was at the strikers end, misread the wrong one and was adjudged plumb LBW.
