Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has officially become the new President of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He is the 39th BCCI President. It also ends the 33-month long reign of the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA).

On Wednesday (23rd October) morning, the BCCI has officially introduced their 39th President. He has been elected unanimously for this role. After Maharajkumar of Vizianagram, Sourav Ganguly is only the second Indian cricketer to become the BCCI President. While Maharajkumar of Vizianagram played three Tests all in 1936, he was the BCCI President from 1954 to 1956.

Bengal cricketer Sourav Ganguly played international cricket from 1992 to 2008. He played 113 Tests and 311 ODIs where the left-handed batsman scored 7,212 runs (average 42.17) and 11,363 runs (average 41.02) respectively. Also, as a right-arm medium pacer, Ganguly took 32 Test wickets and 100 ODI wickets.

Ganguly was one of the successful Indian captains as he led the national side in 195 international matches (49 Tests and 146 ODIs). Under his leadership, India won 97 international matches (21 Tests and 76 ODIs). Ganguly-led India won the ICC Champions Trophy 2002 (jointly with Sri Lanka). He also led Asia XI in ODI.

Sourav Ganguly is an experienced administrator

Before the latest role as BCCI President, Sourav Ganguly has experienced the administrative roles of Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) for more than last five years. According to the new rule, Ganguly can continue the BCCI President role till July 2020 where he will complete his six-year tenure of administrative roles in Indian cricket. After July 2020, Ganguly will face the three-year cooling-off period.

In past, Ganguly was also a part of the BCCI’s technical panel. He was also a member Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) along with Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman. In July 2017, those CAC members chose Ravi Shastri as the Head Coach of Indian men’s national cricket team.

Meanwhile, Vinod Rai-led Committee of Administrators (CoA) has immediately ended their tenure with the announcement of new BCCI President.
