Sourav Ganguly Throws Support Behind Cricketers for Pay Hike

Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly has come in full support of Indian cricketers by stressing the pay hike should get increased, as the central contract has already witnessed the two-fold rise in the national setup.

“Players should get a pay hike,” Ganguly was quoted as saying by India Today.

The 45-year-old Ganguly served India for over 15 years and eventually featured in 311 One-day Internationals and 113 Tests.

Ganguly stated the increment has already witnessed a fair improvement in the past during his playing days.

“They play for 15 years. I think BCCI does that (increase pay). I saw improvement during my career,” Ganguly added.

As the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) members are overseeing the BCCI activities in its recent Status Report stated players have requested for the substantial rise in the payment.

“Yes, they have spoken about a respectable rise. Now any fund disbursement of the BCCI would require the approval of the General Body,” a senior BCCI official told PTI.

Earlier, current Indian skipper Virat Kohli had requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India for India (BCCI) for the hike in the salary, as former skipper and gloveman, Mahendra Singh Dhoni had also advocated for the same purpose.

With the backing of the national players, Kohli is all set to meet the administration to redress the various issues alongside senior campaigner Dhoni.

“The COA also understands that their payment structure needs revision,” the senior office-bearer added.

Now, the players listed in Category A are withdrawing INR 2 crore per annum which was round of INR one crore, before the amendment took place in the Grade A cricketers.

Subsequently, the request has been made for the five-fold rise in the contracts which further added a special policy for the Test specialist like Cheteshwar Pujara. Pertinently, the CoA would discuss the important issues with Team India which in particular includes Kohli and head coach Ravi Shastri for shedding light on the payment of players.

“Unlike reports that players want a share from the IPL broadcast revenue, they have never ever said anything like that,” CoA maintained in its report.

Earlier, the predecessor of Shastri and former India leg-spinner Anil Kumble also voted for the pay raise for Test and limited-overs cricket which further saw him giving out a detailed presentation.

While Kohli and Dhoni are batting out for their teammates, the time would reveal the detailed procedure, as Shastri is bound to meet Vinod Rai, the chief of CoA.

As Kohli has already revealed regarding the rigorous schedule and it would be an interesting matter for the key decisions about the cricket calendar for Team India. The official for BCCI reiterated special meeting should be called upon to work under the constitution of BCCI.

“A Special General Meeting needs to be summoned where all the members will be taking a call. This is as per constitution of BCCI,” BCCI official concluded.
