Sourav Ganguly’s Bronze Statue Removed Due To Political Rift

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly unveiled his 8 feet tall bronze statue in Balurghat, a district in South Dinajpur district in West Bengal on Saturday but just after a couple of days, the statue has been removed from its original place due to a political rift. According to reports from Sportskeeda, the President of District Sports Association and CPIM leader Mr Goutam Goswami’s negligence in inviting the Trinamool Congress MLA and MP’s led to the unforeseen situation.

As per quotes from a local resident Mr Prodipto Roychowdhury, the local TMC leaders weren’t informed about the event in advance which led to an ego clash between two parties which was the eventual reason behind the statue getting moved from its original place. It didn’t go down well with the local people as they almost went for a strike. They felt it was utter disrespect to their one and only Dada.

To take the situation under control, the local council has taken particular actions and have sent a letter to the District Sports Association. They have given the option of placing the statue in one of the most important places of the town, an offer which the District Sports Association is not ready to accept. The DSA has decided that if they can’t keep the statue in the entrance they will send the statue to Ganguly’s house in Behala and the former captain has agreed to the proposal.

It was almost after 15  years that the former captain travelled in a train while going to  Balurghat. He was accompanied by Abhishek Dalmiya. But when he boarded the train and was about to occupy his seat, he saw someone else sitting in his place. He politely asked him to vacate the place as it was his but the man started arguing and eventually authorities shifted Sourav’s seat and moved him to AC 2 tier.

There were a huge number of fans and spectators who gathered at the Bikash Maidan in the Malda district of North Bengal where Ganguly unveiled his statue. After unveiling the statue, Sourav shared the picture on his twitter handle with a caption, “Looks like me”.
