Cricket South Africa (CSA), on Tuesday (May 17), announced the South Africa squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against India. The Proteas will visit the Indian subcontinent for the series next month. The series will get underway in Delhi on June 9. Cuttack, Visakhapatnam and Rajkot will host the next three games before Bengaluru hosts the fifth and final game on June 19. The upcoming series will be South Africa’s first T20I assignment since last year’s T20 World Cup.
CSA have handed maiden call-up to highly-rated young batsman Tristan Stubbs. Stubbs recently grabbed all the headlines after being signed up by IPL franchise Mumbai Indians. The five-time IPL winners had signed the youngster as a replacement for left-arm pacer Tymal Mills. Prior to coming to India for the IPL, Stubbs had impressed one and all with his performance in domestic circuit. In the last season while playing for the Gbets Warriors in the CSA T20 Challenge, he had scored 293 runs in seven innings.
Stubbs had scored the runs at an average of nearly 49 and a strike-rate of more than 183. In those 7 outings, he had also hit a staggering 23 sixes. Later, he was also part of the South Africa ‘A’ team to Zimbabwe. Another notable addition to the team is fast-bowler Wayne Parnell. The left-arm pacer has not played a T20I for the Proteas since 2017. Fast-bowler Anrich Nortje is also a part of the team as he looks to return to international cricket after a long injury layoff. Nortje is currently plying his trade for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2022.
Most of the players in the squad are currently playing in the IPL. The players are – Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Rassie van der Dussen and Marco Jansen. Reeza Hendricks and Heinrich Klaasen have also returned to the team. Middle-order batsman Temba Bavuma will lead the team in the upcoming series.
“This is the Proteas like we have not seen them in a long time. The injection of the IPL players means that we will have a team that’s ready to fire on all cylinders immediately and has vast experience of the conditions that we will be playing in. Tristan Stubbs is an exciting prospect and we’re keen to see what he’s made of and we are looking forward to the return of the experience of Reeza (Hendricks), Klaasie (Heinrich Klaasen) and Wayne Parnell to join the likes of Temba (Bavuma), Tabraiz (Shamsi) and Keshav (Maharaj),” said CSA Convenor of Selectors, Victor Mpitsang.
The country can also join us in a collective sigh of relief at the return of Anrich Nortje, who has been working hard to recover from a frustrating injury. The National Selection Panel and I are really excited to watch our full strength Proteas take on the world’s number one T20 team. We wish Temba Bavuma and Mark Boucher all the best ahead of what we know will be sportainment at its best,” he added.
