South Africa continued their love affair with W.A.C.A. by crushing Australia third consecutive time on this ground, thereby starting the series on a positive note. Playing contrary to the hopes of players, fans and experts, the South African team bamboozled Australia in their own den, to gain a lead on 1-0 in the Test series.

The manner in which the visitors played on the first day of the game, left many questions for but they developed gradually, getting out of the adolescence at the fastest, growing a day older, turning into a wise man, leading to  a win over Australia. South African bowlers need a standing ovation as they had the responsibility to go ahead without their marquee player, Dale Steyn, and still won the game.

Starting the day with a score of 169/4, the Australian team lost their first wicket 27 runs later when Mitchell Marsh was dismissed under controversial circumstances. Half of the Australian team was back in the pavilion with 343 runs still to go. Chasing the target was never in mind of Australia but yes they had an intention to at least save the game, the reason why South African toiled for 57 overs to get those five wickets.

After Marsh’s dismissal, both Usman Khawaja and Peter Nevill steered the team to add 50 runs to the team’s total before Khawaja was bitten by nervous 90’s bug, getting out on a score of 97. Though South Africa got their next wicket just 16 runs later but Australians consumed 16 overs to give then a wicket punishing the African fielders by making them stand for long in the blazing sunlight.

The ninth pair of Josh Hazelwood and Peter Nevill then enforced a cap 21 cap on wickets column which saw Proteas men running here and there during this period. It was the part-timer Temba Bavuma who was called in to break the strong rope between the two.  He with his gentle pace and swing cropped up with a wicket to give relief to the South African team before Keshav Maharaj finally got a wicket in innings in the form of Nathan Lyon who was found missing the ball that hit his leg, placed in front of the stumps.

With that wicket, the South African team was able to put the ball in the goal post in the first game itself. Out of five days, it was only the first day when the South African team looked out of touch. It was a learning curve day for South Africans from which they came out very fast. In the end, they emerged as the winner by the virtue of ending the game 177 runs ahead of Australia.

This game answered to the questions of South Africa team whereas they left many ‘HOTS’ questions Australia. Youngster Kagiso Rabada was judged as the man of the match for his superb bowling performance in the game.
