South Africa Cricketers Face Prospect Of Fines, Jail Time

The last couple of years have been extremely turbulent for South Africa’s cricket fraternity. The targets, ensured to have a certain number of colored players within the starting XI of a team, had its impact as individuals were selected based on their racial background and not the merit on display. As a result, several individuals, who felt they were hard done by, bid adieu to their international careers and moved to England, in order to enhance their prospects.

The move taken by ace pacer Kyle Abbott was the most shocking one, when he announced his decision to go Kolpak and seek a career in England.

Another factor that has drastically impacted South African cricket, has been the fixing scandal that has come to the core in the domestic circuit. During the 2015/16 domestic T20 tournament, several players were found guilty of indulging in match-fixing and passing on information to bookies.

The major worry for the board was that players who represented the nation in the past were also involved. Players such as Thami Tsolekile , Pumelela Matshikwe , Ethy Mbhalati , Jean Symes and Alviro Petersen were charged for match-fixing and accordingly admitted to their bans.

The mentioned individuals were banned from participating in any cricketing activity in South Africa. Currently under investigation is former pacer Lonwabo Tsotsobe. The left-arm pacer was also included in the list of match-fixers and is under serious investigation by the board.

In a bid to ensure that such activities do not occur in future, Cricket South Africa (CSA) is likely to introduce jail terms and heavy fines in a bid to eradicate match fixing. If this happens and Tsotsobe is found guilty, he could be the first player to land up in jail.
