South Africa Gel As A Unit, Says Russell Domingo 1

South Africa head coach Russell Domingo has expressed his side is a ‘work in progress’ despite leading the ongoing three-match Test series against the Black Caps 1-0.

The Proteas have been on a role since they’ve landed in New Zealand. After winning the one-off T20 handsomely, AB de Villiers’ side worked hard to earn a 3-2 win in the ODIs. In the ongoing Test series, the visitors have done pretty well and are on the verge of making the tour a complete success.

“The [South Africa] side takes a lot of pride in how well we travel. They (players) enjoy each other’s company; enjoy seeing new countries. That is one of the main ingredients for why we travel well and play good cricket, the guys enjoy being together,” Domingo was quoted as saying by sport24.co.za.

Domingo revealed there are different set of teams in international circuit, who’s batsman have struggled for form but as a unit, the players have compensated for each other.

“All batting units at international level will always have one player that is struggling for form. That is ok, you can’t rely on one player, that is why it’s a batting unit, that is why it’s a team. The team has to try and help those players get out of those slumps,” Domingo said.

“Every player has been in those slumps,” Domingo remarked.

“We have two or three players who are feeling that pressure at the moment and that is a concern. It’s always easier to have one but if you have two or three who are searching for form and runs it does become a bit more challenging,” Domingo added.

“We are fortunate that some guys are in good form; Dean Elgar, Temba Bavuma, Quinton de Kock and Faf du Plessis, they are all in good touch and it is helping the cause.”

Recently, they (Proteas) whitewashed Sri Lanka 3-0 and registered a 2-1 win over Australia in Australia after losing the third and final Test, which was a Pink-Ball affair in Adelaide.

“It’s a massive feat for this side to come here being 1-0 up with one to play. We know it’s not done yet, New Zealand are a quality side and we are going to have to be at our best to beat them,” Domingo expressed.

Earlier, South Africa’s nine-year away winning streak was halted by India in 2015.

“We have lost one series away from home in the last 10 years. The one in India was the one we lost,” Domingo concluded.
