Stats: South Africa Halts New Zealand’s Winning Streak At Home
An unbeaten half-century from Faf du Plessis and some hostile display of fast bowling from Kagiso Rabada helped South Africa to a six-wicket victory over New Zealand in the series-deciding fifth ODI at Eden Park in Auckland.
The series was tied at 2-2 and the victory gave the Proteas a 3-2 series victory. The jubilant skipper AB de Villiers registered South Africa’s 7th consecutive bilateral series wins in ODIs since July 2015. They have won two of those away from home and five of them at home.
It was a case of contrasting scenarios for both the teams, however. On one hand, the Proteas rejoiced and sunk in the celebrations for their hot winning streak. On the other hand, the Blackcaps found it a bit difficult to accept that their flawless winning streak of 8 consecutive series wins at home had come to an end finally.
The winning streak began with the 4-2 win in the 7 match series against Sri Lanka in January 2015. The series win over Sri Lanka was followed by victories over Pakistan in February 2015 and the victory in the 2015 Cricket World against Australia in March 2015 (The fixture is included in the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy).
2016 also was a highly successful year for them. Their winning streak continued as Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Australia against lost to New Zealand in their return tours. Bangladesh toured the country and played 3 ODI series but inflicted a whitewash. The streak continued as they subdued Australia once again and claimed the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy 2017.
Ironically, New Zealand’s last series loss also came at the hands of the Proteas.
Here is the list of the series:
