Sri Lanka Cricket Confirms Suresh Raina and Yusuf Pathan were Set to Play for World XI
Cricket fans could have seen the likes of Suresh Raina, Shahid Afridi, Yusuf Pathan showcasing their expertise for a World XI side against Sri Lanka XI, but the much-awaited fixture, which was initially scheduled to be held on September 8, has now been postponed.
The match was being scheduled to raise funds for flood-affected children in Sri Lanka as well as those hit by drought in other parts of the Island nation. However, Sri Lanka Cricket, on Tuesday (August 29), confirmed that the game had been postponed at the recommendation of their Technical Committee.
And along with with the fans missed the chance to see some of their favourite stars in action. Sri Lanka had refrained from revealing the name of the players when it had announced the plans of holding the game but Ashley De Silva, the CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket, who confirmed the postponement of the event revealed the name of the players who were all set to play for the touring World XI side.
Thanking the players for confirming their participation, de Silva said that the match has only been postponed and will take place at the earliest possible date.
“I must extend my sincere thanks to the players who confirmed their participation – Robin Uthappa, Suresh Raina and Yusuf Pathan (India), Shahid Afridi, Misbah-ul-Haq and Abdul Razzaq (Pakistan), Tymal Mills (England), Graeme Cremer (Zimbabwe), Luke Ronchi (New Zealand), JP Duminy and Farhaan Behardien (South Africa) amongst others, as well the respective Boards for the support extended,” de Silva said.
“We have by no means abandoned this plan, and we will definitely be playing this match at the earliest possible date,” added de Silva.
Meanwhile, Raina is currently representing Air India in the All India Coromandel King Moin-Ud Dowlah Gold Cup tournament in Hyderabad.
The southpaw, who last represented India in ODIs in October 2015, was once again ignored by the selectors for the ongoing limited-overs series in Sri Lanka. Raina has had a brilliant Indian Premier League with the bat, but with the selectors looking keen to try out youngsters, the Uttar Pradesh star is yet to get a call back from the team.
