The International Cricket Council has made huge steps in trying to remove any illegal bowling actions in all forms of the game. The decision taken has already banned more than 10 players internationally because of stringent rules regarding bowling actions.
The Sri Lanka Cricket Board has now started a similar move in domestic cricket. To eradicate any suspected bowling actions right from the bud, the SLC has appointed the Suspect Bowling Action Review Committee. It has already suspended 128 bowlers for doubtful bowling actions.
The SBARC is taking steps to identify potential offenders from the roots. This has given around 170 suspected or erroneous actions from school and club level of cricket in the nation.
.
A report explaining the procedure of the suspensions stated that it was in the hands of the on field umpires. The umpires reported any bowler with a doubtful action. These bowlers were sent to a coaching department set by the board. This department screens the players for erroneous actions and gives them necessary advice.
Out of the 170 cases reported by the umpires, 42 bowlers were cleared after initial processing. The 42 bowlers were given bowling programmes to help them better themselves and to change the action into a completely legal one. The other 128 bowlers could not be changed and there is a high chance that none of them will be able to make it to a higher level as a bowler.
The ICC has applied the rule very stringently on all cricket playing nations. They have shown no mercy in suspending bowlers even with great reputations. The likes of Saeed Ajmal and Sunil Narine were suspended just before the world cup due to a fault in their action. With such harsh decisions taken by the ICC, the SLC has made sure that they are not reprimanded by the ICC
