Sri Lanka Drop Dinesh Chandimal For South Africa Tour

In the wake of the heavy thrashing in the Test series against Australia, Sri Lanka have dropped their skipper Dinesh Chandimal for the upcoming series in South Africa. Opening batsman Dimuth Karunaratne has been named as the captain for the forthcoming series in the African country. Wicketkeeper-batsman Niroshan Dickwella has been named the vice-captain. According to an SLC release, Chandimal has been released to play domestic cricket and regain his form with the bat.

Like most of his teammates, Chandimal had a disastrous outing in Australia. In four innings, the former Sri Lanka skipper scored 5,0,15 and 4. Prior to that, he had failed to do well in New Zealand too, scoring 6 and 6 before playing a 56-run knock.

With the team showing no signs of improvement, the Sri Lanka board made some wholesome changes.  Dilruwan Perera and Roshen Silva, who were part of the squad for the Australia tour, were also left out. The other three players to get the boot are Sadeera Samarawickrama, Dushmantha Chameera and Lahiru Kumara. As many as eight players of the squad have played five or lesser number of games.

Former skipperAngelo Mathews continues to be absent from the squad after injuring his hamstring in New Zealand towards the end of the last year. Opening batsman Kaushal Silva has returned to the squad after scoring two double centuries in first-class cricket.
