Sri Lanka v India, 2nd Test Review: Ravindra Jadeja’s Five Wicket Haul Helps India Secure A Series Win

Sri Lanka faltered in the quest to overcome the follow- on challenge and ceded an easy win by a margin of an innings and 53 runs at the Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo to give India an impregnable 2-0 lead in the three match series.

This win has now given India its 8th series win and Virat Kohli second series win over Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka.

Ravindra Jadeja speeded up the victory process, adding 4 more wickets to complete his 9th five wicket haul, second outside India, finishing with figures of 5/ 152.

After losing two more wickets in the morning session, that of Angelo Mathews and Malinda Pushpakumara, matter took a worse turn when Karunaratne, the lobe standing hope, was doused off shortly after returning from the Lunch break in the 96th over. An over later, Mathews, who survived the opening session after the double blow and conjured up a 69-run stand with Karunaratne, also lost his wicket. Both fell to the bowling of Jadeja.

He left arm spinner quickly completed his five–fer by not letting wickets Dilruwan Perera and Dhanajaya de Silva stay in the middle for long.

Niroshan Dickwella (31) and Rangana Herath (17*) added some zest in the last stages of the dying contest with some carefree hitting. The two stretched the match to a yawning distance although they resorted to attacking measures. The stand was eventually brought down by Hardik Pandya who broke through with the wicket of Dickwella.

Herath and Pradeep also showed substance and were close to taking the game till the Tea break but Ashwin picked the latter and put an end to the game.

Earlier in the day, Mathews brought a much-needed relief and fought hard for the rest of the session with Karunaratne, who earlier in the session completed a well-deserved century.

Resuming to bat on his overnight score of 92, the left hander, who missed out on a second innings hundred in Galle after getting dismissed for 97, went on to register his 7th Test century while Mathews, on the other hand, remained unbeaten on 28 from 52 deliveries.

The two were the desperate hopes of any fight back after the mess created by the Malinda, who started as the night watchman, and Chandimal.

Malinda threw away his gift after surviving 13 overs on a fresh day after playing an unanticipated shot – a strange reverse sweep cum switch hit which saw him miss the full delivery from Ashwin and get clean bowled.

Skipper Chandimal added to the trouble after lost his wicket an over later. Jadeja was successful in getting the edge of the overly defensive right hander and made his return after playing just 6 balls.

Brief Scores:

India 622/9 (Cheteshwar Pujara 133, Ajinkya Rahane 132; Rangana Herath 4/154)
