England’s Test skipper Joe Root believes his team is on the right track for the number one ranking. The English team is currently in the third place in the red ball version. Joe Root led side has already taken an unassailable lead of 2-0 against Sri Lanka in the ongoing Test series. England has 105 rating points and the series win against Sri Lanka has guaranteed them a jump of one place in the rankings table.

Meanwhile, Joe Root is not satiated by a 2-0 win against Sri Lanka. The England captain wants to clean sweep the hosts in their own backyard. If England is able to whitewash the Island Nation in latter’s home conditions, they would become only the third side after India and Australia to ever do it so.

England is in fine form.

“From the start, we tried to plan out how to get to No. 1 in the world and we’re pretty much on track,” Root said. “It’s a great incentive to the group.

“Only two side have won 3-0 here: India last year and Australia in 2004. And they were both the No. 1 side. So it would give the guys a huge amount of confidence if we could carry the momentum, skill levels and smart nature with which we’ve played these first two Tests into the next one.

In fact, Root believes that the England team is not yet a finished product. They are looking for the stable number three and Jonny Bairstow is expected to take that role in the final Test match against Sri Lanka.

“We’re not the finished article,” Root admitted. “We’re still learning and still improving. But we’re going in the right direction and sometimes you have to tinker with things to get to where you want eventually.”

England clinched the series against India by 4-1 and have savored success on the foreign soil, which must have done them a world of good.
