Sri Lanka Vs India 1st Test, Day 2: Twitter Reacts As Bowlers Put India In Driver’s Seat
Jul 27, 2017 at 5:19 PM
After piling up 600 runs, the bowlers have put India on top by reducing Sri Lanka to 154/5 at the end of day two at Galle International Stadium.
In reply to India’s massive first innings total, the hosts went off to a disastrous start with Umesh Yadav trapping Dimuth Karunaratne plumb in front in only the second over. Sri Lanka not only lost a wicket but also lost a review in the process.
I'm sorry but Karunaratne has wasted a review. He was walking back before the ball-tracker came on and would have known he hadn't edged it

A 61-run stand between Upul Tharanga and Danushka Gunathilaka steadied the ship but Mohammed Shami put the visitors on top by dismissing the latter and Kusal Mendis in the same over

Earlier, useful contributions from the middle and lower-order batsmen propelled India to the huge total. Sri Lanka’s bowler had made early inroads on day 2 by taking regular wickets in the opening session but the lack of discipline thereafter allowed the tail-enders to come up with handy knocks as India finished their innings on 600 after starting the day on 399 for 3.
Nuwan Pradeep, who had picked all the three wickets that fell on the opening day, once again made the difference with the ball for the hosts by dismissing Cheteshwar Pujara for 153 early to reduce India to 423 for 4. 9 runs later, Lahiru Kumara sent back Ajinkya Rahane for 57 and gave his team a great chance to claw its way back into the match. However, with the other bowlers failing to step up to the occasions, they failed to do so. The pressure that was built due to the early wickets disappeared due to the fast pace of runs scored by R Ashwin. Sri Lanka managed to dismiss the off-spinner for 47 and Wriddhiman Saha before lunch but India’s score had crossed the 500-run mark.
Fine session for Sri Lanka, picking up 4 wickets. But India past 500. Only one team likely to win from here. Highly unlikely to be home team

After lunch, India were led by debutant Hardik Pandya’s 49-ball 50 and Mohammed Shami’s entertaining 30 that contained 3 sixes to post a mammoth 600.

Here is how Twitter reacted to the day’s play:
The last time India scored 500+ against SL in SL in the first innings of a Bilateral test match…. SL replied with 952 #Fact #SLvIND

If you listen to Russell Arnold's regular stats, you would think SL's been the number 1 Test side in the world since 1982.#SLvInd #SLvsInd

No sixes for 122 overs. And 6 in the next 6 overs! This must be infuriating for Sri Lanka.

India's tail, Sri Lanka's headache

India's run rate of 4.50 is their highest ever in a total of 600 or more & the eighth highest in a total of 600 or more by any team. #SLvInd

Third 600+ total of the year by India in Tests with five months to go. Their record is four 600s in year 2007. #SLvInd

There's a clear X factor with @hardikpandya7 Tougher tests and times to follow for sure but love the added zing when he bats #IndvSL

Only the second home Test for SL where four bowlers conceded over 100 runs.
Previous was also vs India, at Colombo(SSC) in 2010.#SLvIND— Deepu Narayanan (@deeputalks) July 27, 2017
When Pujara started batting there was Jungleraj in Bihar, by the time he got out, Ramraj got established. Revolutionary inning. #IndvsSL
