Sri Lanka vs India 2017, 1st ODI: Indian Spinners Restrict Hosts to 216 in Dambulla

Sri Lanka has set a target of 217 runs for the formidable India in first of the five-match ODI series at Dambulla on Sunday, after the hosts’ innings wrapped inside 43.2 overs, as they post a meek 216 on the board.

For India, the pick of the bowlers was Axar Patel, who bagged three wickets in his quota of 10 overs after giving away 34 runs. The right-handed batsman Angelo Mathews scored 50-ball unbeaten 36 after registering a six and boundary, respectively.

Kedar Jadhav, Yuzvendra Chahal and Jasprit Bumrah bagged two wickets each, as two opening fast bowlers in the form of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Hardik Pandya went wicket-less. Thisara Perera, who returned to the fold, was clean bowled by Jasprit Bumrah on nought, before finishing the Lankans innings by dismissing last man Vishwa Fernando, who faced six balls without scoring a run.

Following the quality start with the bat the hosts did not lose any wicket until 13.5 overs which further saw Indian bowlers making a significant comeback against the Upul Tharanga-led Lions by picking wickets at regular intervals.

Earlier, batting first, the two openers in the form of southpaw Niroshan Dickwella and Danushka Gunathilaka gave a cautious start to the hosts. However, Indian slow bowlers tightened the grip while sharing seven wickets which helped the Men in Blue to put pressure solely back on the Islanders.

At one stage, the Sri Lankan side was cruising at 139 for one in 24.2 overs and went to finish their innings at 216. After posting 74 runs for the first wicket, Gunathilaka threw away his wicket after opting for a reverse-sweep, as the ball took the edge of the bat’s toe only to find the safe pair of hands of KL Rahul at the extra cover region.

Early on, Sri Lanka had become a different unit altogether when the series shifted to limited-overs format in the initial over after Virat Kohli opted to field first on a wicket which looked good in the first look.

In 25th over, Lankans lost their second wicket in the form of gloveman Dickwella which further opened the floodgates. The left-handed batsman registered 64 off 74 deliveries before being trapped in front of the wickets by off-spinner Kedar Jadhav after offering a tiered short.

However, Dickwella’s batting partner Kusal Mendis suggested the former to go for a review which further got wasted, as the on-field umpire’s decision was upheld.

Dickwella added vital 65 runs for the second wicket alongside the 22-year-old right-handed batsman Mendis. Mendis, who settled his eye in scored 36 off 27 balls, before being undone by left-arm orthodox bowler Axar Patel. In 33rd over, Sri Lanka skipper Upul Tharanga (13 off 23) was caught by Shikhar Dhawan at the long-on region on the bowling of Jadhav.

Earlier, on-field umpire asked the left-handed batsman to wait for the confirmation. However, the replays suggested the ball was dipping below the waist, as Tharanga had to make his way to the pavilion. In the very next over, Chamara Kapugedera (1 of 2) was found short of his crease by Virat Kohli, who dislodged the bails after an underarm throw from the extra cover. The TV replays suggested the batsman did not make his crease on time, before on-field umpire raised his dreaded finger.

The rookie batsman Wanidu Hasaranga (2 off 5) was caught by Jadhav brilliantly after completing a skier on the bowling of Axar Patel. Gloveman MS Dhoni stumped Lasith Malinga on the bowling of leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal.

Lakshan Sandakan was caught in front of the stumps, before being adjudged leg before wicket (LBW) by Patel after scoring five of eight balls.
