Sri Lanka vs India 2017, 4th ODI: Security Beefed up for Colombo Clash
Following the crowd trouble in the third One-Day International at Pallekele, Sri Lanka has beefed up the security for the upcoming fourth ODI in Colombo on Thursday (August 31).
The Sri Lankan fans had lost their patience after yet another poor display from the team and expressed their frustration by throwing bottles and other objects on the field when India was just eight runs short of victory. Consequently, the game was stopped for over half an hour and was only resumed after the stands were vacated.
The incident had led ICC Match Referee Andy Pycroft to ask the Sri Lankan officials for assurance that there would be no more crowd trouble and to ensure players’ safety. As a result, Sri Lanka has now decided to deploy close to 1000 additional police in the stadium in addition to using CCTV cameras to monitor the crowds for the upcoming game.
“Any spectator who throws any bottles or projectiles at the players will be immediately arrested,” the police said in a statement.
Former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga has given a controversial statement after the first instance of a crowd trouble in Sri Lankan stadium. Taking a dig at the Indian spectators, the World Cup-winning captain said:
“I request our cricket lovers not to behave like Indian spectators. We have a very good history and culture. Such misbehaviour is not accepted in our culture and history.”
Meanwhile, the series is already decided in India’s favour, but the hosts need to win the remaining two games of the five-match series to ensure an automatic qualification for the next World Cup.
However, they have been dealt yet another blow, as their stand-in skipper, Chamara Kapugedera is ruled out of the match due to a back problem. Veteran pacer Lasith Malinga will lead the side in the penultimate game of the series.
