Sri Lanka’s stand-in skipper Chamara Kapugedera has been ruled out of the ODI series against India. He was announced as the skipper of the side after a ban on Upul Tharanga and an injury to him has added to the woes of the team. Kapugedera is suffering from a back injury and was in pain even during the third ODI. Though he came out to bat now, he is deemed unfit to take part in the series.

Sri Lanka has to now announce a new captain for the fourth ODI. The race is between Lasith Malinga and Angelo Mathews, out of which the former is the favorite. The 2014 T20 World Cup winning captain is deemed to be an automatic choice as there are rare chances of Mathews accepting the captaincy offer for just one international game. He recently stepped down from the post after a series loss against Zimbabwe, which led to the announcement of two new captains in form of Dinesh Chandimal (Test) and Tharanga (ODI and T20I).
Kapugedera has joined the long list of injured players during the series. Incidentally, the first player to get injured before the start of the series was Murali Vijay, who was ruled out before the Tests series. Following that, Asela Gunaratne, Nuwan Pradeep, Suranaga Lakmal, Rangana Herath, Kushal Perera and Danushka Gunathalaika joined the injury list too. Now, apart from the announcing the replacement for Kapugedera, the selectors have to also announce a new leader.
