Sri Lanka Vs India 2017: Hosts Call Up Ashan Priyanjan As Milinda Siriwardana’s Cover
Sri Lanka, on Tuesday (September 5), reportedly called up Ashlan Priyanjan as the backup for spin all-rounder Milinda Siriwardana for the upcoming one-off T20I against India scheduled on Wednesday at Colombo.
The hosts decided after Siriwardana complained about tightness in back and hamstring, putting his participation in doubt. According to the report in Cricbuzz, the 31-year-old will go through a fitness test before the game.
If Siriwardana fails to recover from the niggle, it will be a huge blow for the hosts who are desperate to win the upcoming game to restore their pride which has taken a severe beating following the disastrous outings in Tests and ODIs.
The left-handed batsman was in a good touch with the bat during the five-match ODI series, scoring 144 runs in four outings including a half-century in addition to picking up a wicket.
Meanwhile, Siriwardana’s backup Priyanjan is yet to make his debut in the shortest format of the game. The 28-year-old has represented Sri Lanka in 23 ODIs, but his last appearance came more than two years back at home against Pakistan. So far, he has scored 420 runs and has picked up five wickets.
The one-off T20I, meanwhile, will be Sri Lanka’s last chance for redemption. The year has been nothing short of a disaster for them where they exited the Champions Trophy at the group stage, lost to Zimbabwe at home, were recently whitewashed by India in both Tests and ODIs and the upcoming T20I will be their only chance to restore their pride.
While the Men in Blue are looking unstoppable at the moment, the Islanders will be backing themselves to spring a surprise, having to perform well in the shortest format of the game this year. Sri Lanka had beaten Australia and South Africa 2-1 away from home this year while India had lost two of their last four T20Is.
