Team Indian Selectors are expected to meet tomorrow (Friday) to pick the limited overs squad for the series against Sri Lanka and captain Virat Kohli is expected to be given a break.
Rohit Sharma has made a comeback after missing the ODI series in West Indies and will be raring to put the best foot forward. If Kohli does get a break, then the immediate question is who will captain the team in his absence?
With Ajinkya Rahane not being a regular feature in the limited overs team, it is unlikely that he will lead the side so in that case Rohit Sharma might be handed over the reign for the series. It is not confirmed yet but it might be the case if Kohli is dropped. It remains to be seen who will come in at No.3 in place of Kohli.
It might be Rahane but the team management might be tempted to push Kedar Jadhav up the order given the fact that he hasn’t got enough deliveries to get going.
Yuvraj Singh with his lacklustre form and might be omitted but he is expected to play in the first two matches at least. So if Rohit Sharma is handed over the captaincy for the series who will be his deputy?
Rahane might not be a part of the Playing XI so he might not be given the job but after his impressive showing in the Caribbean, anything can happen.
Shikhar Dhawan who has regained his lost touch and performed exceptionally well in the ICC Champions Trophy might also be an option for Rohit’s deputy. Despite KL Rahul being a preferred choice ahead of the Champions Trophy, he might have to sit after Dhawan’s dream run in the Champions Trophy. He has been an impact player so Rahul might have to wait yet again.
There are many permutations and combinations available but it remains to be seen who becomes Rohit’s deputy if Kohli is given a rest.
