Sri Lanka Vs India, 2017: Know Why Rohit Sharma Won’t Be Included In The Playing XI Of Tests Against Islanders

Following the occasional blip, the makeshift opener Rohit Sharma has been a cornerstone for Men in Blue in the limited-overs format while coming at the top to score runs at will, but he looked a bit rusty when it comes to a longer format owing to his capability to tackle any precarious state of affairs in the middle or whilst coming to face the new ball, after a thumping start while donning the white jersey in particular.

The 30-year-old Maharashtra-born Rohit has been quintessential with the bat at the top after starting off as a middle-order batsman while having the knack of playing long innings.

Known for rotating the strike and shifting the gear according to the situation of the game, Rohit has been one of the premier batsmen for India, in the modern-day cricket, who is aiming to make his Test comeback after undergoing successful thigh surgery.

The only reason Rohit would miss out the remainder of the ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka would be that skipper Virat Kohli would not be eyeing to tinker too much while unsettling the winning combination after the successful home run in the longer format and leading the series 1-0 on Lankan shores.

On the other side, Kohli and Team India’s coach had a different idea to execute and the side is likely to come up as a five-bowler ploy in the Playing XI which further minimize the chances of Sharma for the second Test scheduled from August 3 (Thursday) in Colombo, including two premium slow bowlers Ravichandran Ashwin and ranked No.1 in Test Ravindra Jadeja.

Interestingly, Sharma has last played his last Test match against New Zealand in October 2016, as he missed out a gruelling series against Australia and England at home before One-Test in Hyderabad in February versus Bangladesh.

Understandably, the other reason for Kohli as a leader could be Rohit’s substantial surgery in order to give him more time, before returning to the Test setup, in a bid to give him an extended run in the bigger upcoming fixtures owing to demand.

Following the significant promotion to bat as an opener in 2013, under the dynamic leadership of the then skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Rohit was a delight to watch, as he faced the new white-ball while showing courage and the grit at the same time – to prove his move a worth to be noticed.

Showing his class, Rohit has made things ridiculously easy for his team with the bat while piercing the gaps to pile up the miseries for quality bowlers.

Having a great appetite for the runs, Rohit has somewhat failed to replicate in the five-day format after what he actually have had achieved in the ODI format since making his international debut in 2007 at Belfast against Ireland.

Being in the scheme of things, Sharma was included in the Test squad in November 2013 when Windies toured India under the captaincy of Darren Sammy as the right-handed batsman went on to register two centuries in his first two Test innings in Kolkata and Mumbai respectively when coming to bat at number six.

However, in One-day Internationals Rohit was unstoppable as he went on to smash two double hundreds, as he also registered highest 50-over individual score off 264 after facing 173 deliveries against Sri Lanka in iconic Kolkata’s Eden Garden stadium.

In 36 innings of Test, Sharma has registered two hundreds and seven fifties while amassing 1,184 runs at an average of 37.

Rohit would be eyeing to cross past the five-day batting average of 40 – to cement his spot in the Test cricket, as India is topping the charts in the longer format.
