Sri Lanka Vs India 2017: Manish Pandey Sweats It Out In Nets, Looks Set To Play 4th ODI
With Team India keen to have a settled and strong unit for 2019 World Cup, it is very much clear that the team management will continue experimenting with the playing eleven. After captain Virat Kohli made it clear that the team will alter the lineups in the coming days; fielding coach R Sridhar also reiterated it, saying that the team would experiment over the next 18 months.
“The way we look at every game is that we take something into the next game and the remaining part of the series. I think the way the last game shaped up was a wonderful learning curve for us,” Sridhar had said before the third ODI against Sri Lanka. “Even before the series started, we all knew that there was going to be some experiments from us going ahead over the next 18 months. It has been a great learning.”
Well, it looks like middle-order batsman Manish Pandey may get a chance in the playing eleven for the fourth ODI scheduled to be played in Colombo on Thursday (August 31).
With the series already in pocket, India will be keen to try out some other players and given that KL Rahul and Kedar Kadhav have flopped as middle-order batsmen, Manish can return to the starting lineup for the upcoming match. Rahul’s failure in the second and third ODIs is bound to give the team management a slight headache as the number 4 spot is still a worry. With the likes of Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina not in the frame right now, Manish Pandey looks a safe bet for the time being.
The Karnataka star had proved his mettle when he had scored an outstanding century at number 4 to help India win a thriller in Australia last year and his recent performances will also tempt the think tank to try him out. The 26-year-old is fresh from his heroics in South Africa where he led India A to tri-series glory. The right-handed batsman came out with the scores of 55, 41*, 86*, 93* and 32* and ended the series as the leading run-scorer.
The Twitter handle of the BCCI posted a video of Pandey sweating it out in the nets which can be a slight hint that the right-hander is set to play the penultimate game of the five-match series.

Meanwhile, if Pandey manages to perform well if he gets the chance, it will make life difficult for veteran batsmen- Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina- who are eyeing a comeback to the team. Raina has not played an ODI since October 2015 while Yuvraj was dropped from the team for the ongoing series after his string of poor performances since making his comeback to 50-over cricket earlier this year following a 3-year gap.
