With time, the Indian off-spinner R Ashwin is breaking records on daily basis and on the third day of the second Test against Sri Lanka as well, Ashwin broke a record as he overtook Harbhajan Singh in terms of most five-fer taken in Test cricket by an Indian bowler.
Generally known as ‘Bhajji’, Harbhajan Singh has a total of 25 five-fer in his account in 103 Test matches whereas Ashwin has gone past him in his just 51st Test match, to show his prowess in spin bowling. Harbhajan Singh is the highest wicket-taker for India in off-spin bowling and looking at the pace which Ashwin is moving ahead, he might overtake Bhajji to become highest wicket taker in off spin bowling as well.
There can be a case when he might also go ahead of Anil Kumble – the highest wicket taker for India in Test cricket. Kumble has a total of 619 wickets in 132 Tests and in all probability, Ashwin is looking favourite to go past the former Head Coach Of Indian cricket team.
| Player | Five-Fers | Test Played |
| Anil Kumble | 35 | 132 |
| R Ashwin | 26 | 51* |
| Harbhajan Singh | 25 | 103 |
| Kapil Dev | 23 | 131 |
| Bhagwath Chandrasekhar | 16 | 58 |
Talking of the game, Sri Lanka has already been bundled out on a score of 183 and are still trailing by a margin of 439 runs. Unlike the last game, skipper Virat Kohli has decided to enforce follow on the Lankan team and there can be a case when the game might end today itself as Sri Lanka lost a total of eight wickets in the first session. The Indian bowlers will look to continue to take wickets at the same pace and the match should not extend to the penultimate day.
Meanwhile, Ravindra Jadeja also vaulted into record books as became the fastest ever left arm bowler to reach to 150 wickets. He achieved this record in his 32nd outing. He also completed his 100 wickets under the leadership of Virat Kohli.
