Sri Lanka Vs India 2017: “The Series Is Not Yet Over,” Says Sri Lankan Skipper Dinesh Chandimal

Dinesh Chandimal, the newly appointed Sri Lanka’s Test skipper, has tried to fill confidence in the deflated Sri Lankan team a day ahead of the third Test, Chandimal said that the series is not yet over and the team will look to win the game, so as to upset India,

“As far as we are concerned, the series is not yet over. As a captain, I don’t like to lose. Be it the world’s No. 1 team or the No. 8 team, I want to win. We’re giving our full effort towards that end but we cannot control the ultimate result. There is always pressure. We’re two down now but still, we’re a really good team. As a team, we’re hoping to win this game. If we can do that, definitely we can get more confidence and go forward. We’re looking forward to that,” said Chandimal.

Digging deep into the performance of the Lankan team, the bowling and batting have not matched to the desired standards. The performance came, but in pieces which totally failed to lift the confidence of the team. Apart from that, the innings from Kusal Mendis and Dimuth Karunaratene, there were no take aways from the second Test.

In the first Test, Nuwan Pradeep was the sole performer for the team but an injury to him added to the woes of the team and now he has left big boots to fill. But he is not the only one to leave the team mid-series as Asela Gunaratne, Rangana Herath and Suranga Lakmal are few of those to leave the team midway. Apart from them, skipper himself missed the first Test match due to health issues, which led to an abysmal start to the series for the home side,

“India is a really good team, especially in the last two to three years. But players of my team keep getting injured. If you look at, Asela (Gunaratne) got injured in the first game and then Nuwan and Herath in the second game. Then, the captain, the management and the selectors cannot get the right combination. Players like Rangana, Nuwan Pradeep and Asela are really good. We’re struggling because of that also, but we don’t want to give any excuses,” skipper added on injury concerns to the Sri Lankan players.

Though there is a bit of relief for Sri Lankan side as India will be short of Ravindra Jadeja – the Man of the Match of the previous game. He was suspended for the Pallekle Test due to the violation of rules and has already flown back to India. Axar Patel has already been drafted into the squad to replace him. The absence of Jadeja in the team has surely left big devoid, an area which the home side will look to exploit,

“We all know he is the No. 1 (Test) bowler at the moment. It gives us a bit of confidence (that is he isn’t playing), but it’s a bit unfortunate for you (India) guys,” Chandimal added

The third and the final Test of the series starts from August 12. The Indian team will look to seal a win and accomplish first ever series whitewash under skipper Virat Kohli. However, there are high chances of rain playing a spoilsport, which can lead to an abrupt end to the series.
