Sri Lanka vs India 2017: Sri Lanka Cricket is Going Through the Worst Period: Arjuna Ranatunga
Few days after taking a shot at the Sri Lanka Cricket officials, former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga has come down heavily on the country’s cricket administrators once again after the Islanders were whitewashed by India in the recently-concluded three-match Test series.
The Island nation is going through a tough time this year. They were whitewashed in Tests and ODIs in the early part of the year before they failed the home series against Bangladesh. A T20I series win against South Africa and Australia provided some respite but group-stage exit from the Champions Trophy and ODI series loss at home to Zimbabwe compounded their miseries. Also, it led to Angelo Mathews stepping down from captaincy in all three formats.
And as if all these were not enough, they were completely outplayed by India in the Test series. After a 304-run loss in the series-opener at Galle, they lost the next by an innings and 53 runs. The humiliation was completed in Pallekele when the hosts were beaten by an innings and 171 runs.
But despite the players failing to perform match after match, Ranatunga has blamed the management for the sorry state of affairs of the game in the country.
“Sri Lanka cricket is going through the worst period,” Ranatunga told reporters in Colombo. “You can’t blame only the players, they are demoralised. It is the fault of the management.”
Earlier this month, the World Cup-winning skipper had said he was ‘so disgusted’ at the way the Sri Lankan cricket is administered that he has stopped watching the national team playing cricket.
“Sri Lanka Cricket and the manner in which it is being administered and managed is so disgusting that I don’t watch our national cricket anymore,” Ranatunga had said.
It should be remembered that Ranatunga has been quite vocal in his criticism for Sri Lanka in recent time. Recently, he had said that the 2011 World Cup final which the Islanders lost against India looked fixed.
