India won the toss and chose to bat first in the fourth ODI at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Virat Kohli opted to bat first on a hot and humid afternoon. Indian team made three changes for the fourth ODI, replacing Kedar Jadhav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Yuzvender Chahal with Manish  Pandey, Kuldeep Yadav and Shardul Thakur making his international debut in this match.

The decision seemed to have backfired as India lost Shikhar Dhawan in the second over for just four runs. However, this initial jitter did not restrict the Indian captain from playing his shot as he took the attack back to the Sri Lankan bowlers. Kohli scored a blistering 131 off 96 deliveries. At one stage India were cruising at 225-1 in 29.3 overs when Malinga came back into the attack and removed Virat Kohli. Hardik Pandya got promoted in the batting line up to keep the run rate going for the team, but he fell on 19 runs off 18 deliveries.

Rohit Sharma hit his second hundred in as many matches which made him the first player to hit two consecutive ODI centuries in Sri Lanka. Sharma scored 104 runs in 88 balls. Sri Lanka pulled things back as Angelo Matthews removed Pandya and Sharma in successive deliveries.  KL Rahul also failed to make it three failures in three matches. He got caught at short mid-wicket for seven runs. Mahendra Singh Dhoni, playing his 300th ODI came into bat next. Manish Pandey along with Dhoni steadied the innings after the mini collapse

For Sri Lanka, Angelo Matthews bowled excellent line and lengths to control the run flow of the India team. Matthew bowled two maidens in his spell and gave away   in   overs
