Sri Lanka vs India 2017: “We Need Your Support” – Upul Tharanga Requests Fans to Keep Patience

A series levelling competition against Bangladesh, an early exit from the ICC Champions Trophy, an ODI series defeat against ‘minnows’ Zimbabwe and a complete whitewash against India in the Test series.

Past few months have not been great for the Sri Lankan team. They have been floored by each and every team and could even manage to enjoy the win in the Test that came against Zimbabwe because that too was a hard earned win.

Results are not going Sri Lanka’s way and this has led to all-round criticism. Remember, when Sri Lanka lost a Test to Bangladesh in the month of March, a Lankan newspaper marked it as the death of the Sri Lankan cricket.

In short, apart from public, media too is not leaving any stone unturned to criticize the team and amidst all this, Upul Tharanga, the newly appointed ODI and T20I skipper, has sent out a message to the fans of Lankan cricket, in which he has asked for their support,

“Sri Lanka has always been stronger in our white-ball format, and I am confident that we will come out strong and beat India. We have the talent, we have the skill. We have been putting in the hard work, we just need the spirit, and for that, we need your support too,” said Tharanga.

“The support of our fans plays a big role in the morale of the team. We play for our country and our goal is to bring pride to our family of 20 million in this nation – so your support is something that matters greatly to us. Yesterday despite the defeat (by an innings and 171 runs in the third Test here), we saw spectators cheering us and applauding us – this is what we need. It inspires us to fight harder too,” he added.

His comments have come ahead to the start of the limited over series against visiting Indian team, which crushed them in the Test series for the second consecutive time under the captaincy of Virat Kohli, who became the only Indian captain to win two Test series in Sri Lanka.

The Indian team is expected to carry forward the same form in the limited overs series as well and if they continue to dominate the hosts the same way, then the Lankan cricket would not ask for anything worse, as recently, Angelo Matthews resigned from the captaincy post team’s poor form under him.

Dinesh Chandimal – the Test skipper – though kicked off his regime with a win in Test against Zimbabwe, but later went onto lose the Tests series against India by a margin of 3-0. Tharanga is expected to turn the fortunes of the team, the chances of which are highly bleak and weak.

The limited over series between India and Sri Lanka starts from August 20, with the first game to be played on August 20 in Dambulla.
