Sri Lanka Vs India 2017 – We Will Be Experimenting A Lot From Now On – Virat Kohli
Carrying on from their rich vein of form from the Test series, team India put up another show of complete dominance at Dambulla, to wrap up the first ODI in some style.
Things began looking bright in the first half after the visitors managed to pull Sri Lanka back from a position of 139-1 to bowling them out for just 216. The slow bowlers chipped in with crucial wickets to dent Sri Lanka’s cause.
However, the fascinating aspect of India’s performance was the approach to the target. Despite Rohit Sharma getting dismissed early to a run-out, Shikhar Dhawan went out all guns blazing as he was unstoppable in his approach. Notching up the 11th ton of his career, Dhawan scored at a tremendous rate and was so fierce, that Kohli had to play second fiddle.
Eventually, India sealed the game off with over 20 overs to spare, as Kohli too chipped in with an impressive half-century. Post the game, Kohli lauded his side in the post-match presentation and spoke about the need to try out all options.
“They got off to a really good start,” said Kohli. “We thought we would chase close to 300; it was a good pitch to bat on. The point of batting second was that it would come on later in the day. It came on like a dream. The last three months have been a great time for Dhawan, and he’s cashing in on his purple patch. Hopefully, he stays in this happy zone, and we’ll make sure he stays there because he will win you games as long he’s in it.”
Also justifying the move to have Axar Patel in the scheme of things, Kohli said,
“We’re going to experiment and embrace that. You can expect to see a lot of changes from now o]. All the guys have bought into it. It’s all about what gives us more balance. The start of the series it’s about getting the batting right. Axar brings something with the bat, and he’s a gun fielder. We felt one wrist spinner was enough. In another match, we might bring in a pacer or play three spinners. It’s all about getting the balance.”
