After an astounding win the Two match series Sri Lanka is ahead of Pakistan by 1-0. Sri Lanka will have to win this match to register this series. Pakistan have to give their full strength to draw this series. They cannot win the series but they have to give a tight fight to draw this match. Sri Lanka is in great form lately. On the other hand Pakistan is not in good shape. Sri Lanka won the toss and Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews elected to bat first. It is Mahela Jayawardene‘s 149th and final Test of his career.
In the first session Junaid Khan and Wahab Riaz started the bowling spell. Upul Tharanga and Kaushal Silva, openers of Sri Lankan team came to the pitch. From the initial overs Sri Lankan openers were putting pressures on the Pakistani bowlers. They gave a good momentum on the Sri Lankan scoreboard. After the end of 10 over they Sri Lanka were at 28 runs for no loss of wickets. They were rotating the strike quite fast. Saeed Ajmal, Abdur Rehman joined the bowling attack to break this partnership. Good starting session for Sri Lanka, no wickets lost and very few alarming moments for their openers. Sarfraz would have needed to slow time down Matrix-style to effect that stumping, so that should not really count as a chance, but Ajmal has probed away pretty well so far. Rehman has not quite fine-tuned his radar yet, and Junaid has looked pretty good without doing too much in the air or off the pitch. Wahab’s hurried both batsmen a couple of times, but he was also given them a few freebies. Pakistan have kept the run rate down to well under 3 an over. A dull session at Colombo. The Lankans have cruised to 69/0.
Ajmal starts of after lunch from one end and Junaid from the other. The Lankan openers are happy to nudge around and take the singles. Junaid does get Tharanga in a spot of bother with change of pace but no harm done. In 33rd over Silva got out by Junaid Khan. Silva contributed a quick 41 runs on the board. Sangakkara came out to the crease to take Silva’s place. Sangakkara needs 93 runs to have his name imprinted on the list of test batsmen with 12000 runs. But Tharanga did not stop his bat after losing a wicket. Sangakkara joined him cautiously, Wahab Riaz bowled him in the 48th over. He contributed only 22 runs in this innings. Mahela Jayawardane came out from the dressing room and the Pakistan players give Mahela a guard of honour as he walks out to bat, and everyone in the stands is up on his or her feet. Mahela and Tharanga were rotating the strike quite fast. Jayawardane got lucky and got a second chance in his last match. At the end of the second session Sri Lanka were at 162 runs for the loss of 2 wickets.
In the third session Pakistan got an early success as they got the big man “Jayawardane” into their net. Jayawardane scored only 4 runs in this session. Pakistan dominated in the third session. They got some quick wickets in this session. In the 60th over Tharanga was out. The ball was angled into the pads, and Tharanga flicked that, he middled that flick, and Azhar Ali reacted like a flash to grab that while falling to his right. He did not have too far to move, but he had no time to get his hands in position. Tharanga played a magnificent innings of 92 runs. Thirimanne and Mathews was on the crease then. After the end of 65th over Sri Lanka was at 193 runs for the loss of 4 wickets. Junaid khan took another wicket of Thirimanne. Dickwella came out replacing Thirimanne on the crease. After the end of 75th over they were at 218 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. After the first partnership no one able to create a good partnership in the innings. The day is registered for Junaid Khan as he took two, Dickwella’s and Perera’s wicket in his pocket. Mathews and Prasad were on the crease then. After the end of 85th over they were at 261 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. In the last ball of the day Mathews got out by Riaz. After the first day Sri Lanka scored 261 runs for the loss of 8 wickets.
