Sri Lanka vs Zimbabwe 2017: Danushka Gunathilaka In Contention For Test Debut
Danushka Gunathilaka, who made his presence felt in the recently concluded Champions Trophy with his hard-hitting batting prowess could be in contention for a Test debut after being named in the 15-man squad which will face Zimbabwe in the one-off Test in Colombo starting from 14th July.
Dusmantha Chameera and Vishwa Fernando have regained their places while youngster Dhananjaya de Silva has faced the axe.
The Islanders have already been jolted by the absence of Nuwan Pradeep and Kusal Perera who are recuperating from their respective injuries and won’t play a part in the solitary Test. For the first time, Dinesh Chandimal will be leading the side in the longest format as a full-time captain following Angelo Mathews’ resignation from the post after Sri Lanka’s series defeat to Zimbabwe.
Despite handing the captaincy to Chandimal, Mathews will continue to feature in the team as an all-rounder and will look to prove his worth in the team purely as a player. The unexpected series defeat to Zimbabwe prompted Mathews to take the call, as he made it pretty clear that it was the lowest point in his career.
He sat with Sanath Jayasuriya to decide on his fate, as told by a Sri Lanka cricket official and decided to free himself of the captaincy duties from all three formats of the game. While Chandimal will be leading the side in the longest format, Upul Tharanga will be marshalling the troops in the limited overs format. The southpaw has led the Islanders in the absence of Mathews and his full-time appointment will surely throw a huge challenge to him and he will look to pass the test with flying colours.
Zimbabwe chased down a mammoth total in the 1st ODI with relative ease and despite Sri Lanka’s comeback in the next two matches, the African minnows proved to be the more superior side in the last two matches which eventually helped them seal the five-match series by a 3-2 margin. It was a bitter pill to swallow for the Islanders as said by Mathews but they have to pull up their socks and be prepared for the challenge in the solitary Test match.
Sri Lanka Squad: Dinesh Chandimal (c), Upul Tharanga, Danushka Gunathilaka, Niroshan Dickwella, Dimuth Karunaratne, Angelo Mathews, Asela Gunaratne, Rangana Herath, Kusal Mendis, Lahiru Kumara, Dilruwan Perera, Lakshan Sandakan, Vishwa Fernando, Dushmantha Chameera, Suranga Lakmal.
