All eyes will be on the newly-appointed five-member Indian selection committee which will meet in Delhi on Thursday to select the team for the upcoming five-match one-day series against New Zealand.
The selectors will be under immense pressure to pick a team after four important players have been injured during the on-going Test series. They will be in a huge dilemma over the decision of whether to include KL Rahul, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Shikhar Dhawan or not in the team. All the three players have been ruled out of the Test series after suffering injuries. Meanwhile, there are several players who are desperately waiting for receiving a call from the team and one of them is star batsman Yuvraj Singh.
The southpaw, who was one of India’s most important batsman in limited overs during the last decade, has been out of the ODI team since 2013. After recovering from cancer and making a comeback to the Indian team, the batsman has failed to recover his old touch but he has shown the glimpse of his immense potential in few T20 matches.
Another factor that can work in his favour is his record of performing in ICC tournaments. The left-handed batsman played a vital role in 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 50-overs World Cup and with the Champions Trophy to be played next year, he can get a recall. Suresh Raina’s poor form means he is unlikely to get a call in the team and in that case, Yuvraj can add his vast wealth of experience to the young team.
Meanwhile, Gautam Gambhir’s return to the Test side after two years is an indication that the selectors are considering the form and not the age when it comes to selecting the squad. Yuvraj is a proven match-winner and we all know what he can do when he is in full flow. With the 2019 World Cup also in sight, Yuvraj can play a vital role for the team.
