Stat Attack: Alastair Cook Becomes The First England Player To Cross 11,000-Run Mark In Test
Dec 16, 2016 at 2:39 PM
During a series where he and his team has rarely got a moment to celebrate, Alastair Cook has achieved a milestone that might work as a fresh breath of air for the under-pressure England skipper. The left-handed batsman became the youngest and the first Englishmen to score surpass the 11,000-run mark in Tests when he pushed the first ball of fifth Test for a couple of runs.
However, the English star could not make the occasion a memorable one as eight runs later he edged a Ravindra Jadeja delivery straight to Virat Kohli in the slips. It was the fifth time the English batting star was dismissed by the Indian spinner in the ongoing series.
Cook, who is also the leading century maker from his country with 30 tons, is the tenth batsmen overall to cross the 11,000 run in Tests. Match-wise, he is the eighth fastest player to achieve this feat. The list is led by former Sri Lanka batsman Kumar Sangakkara who achieved the milestone in his 208th innings compared to Cook who did it in his 252nd innings.
Here is a list of players fastest to 11,000 runs:
Player | Time | Mat | Inns |
KC Sangakkara (SL) | 13y 199d | 122 | 208 |
BC Lara (ICC/WI) | 14y 354d | 121 | 213 |

The English captain, who will turn 32 on Christmas Day, is tenth in the list of highest run-getter in Tests. India’s Sachin Tendulkar leads the list with 15,921 runs from 200 Tests, the highest ever for a player. But considering the fact that Tendulkar crossed the 11,000-run mark at the age of 34, Cook will back himself to get close to Sachin’s record if not break it.
Here is a top-10 list of highest run-scorers in Tests:
Player | Span | Mat | Inns | Runs | HS | Ave | 100 | 50 |

Meanwhile, Cook will hope he gets back to form quickly if he is eyeing the record of the Indian batting legend. The southpaw has struggled in the ongoing series and has managed to score only 320 runs in nine innings so far.
