This was probably the only time on New Zealand tour when Indian team looked in control on that abortive tour. After losing the first Test by a margin of 40 runs, Indian bowlers made a strong recovery on the first day of the second Test dismissing Kiwis on 192 in just 52.5 overs. Ishant Sharma scalped 6 wickets whereas Shami grabbed a four-for. The Indian team had a great run in the second innings scoring 438 runs and gained a lead of 246 runs. Captain Dhoni was expecting the same show from India bowlers in the third linings as well but Kiwi batting line-up led by Brendon McCllum crushed Indian bowlers as Kiwis went on to pile up 680 runs on the board. McCullum went on to score 302 runs to lead the charge asking India to chase 435 in the last innings. The scarcity of time deprived both the teams a chance to win the game as all the two results were possible but the third one happened.
