Sunil Gavaskar:
India’s greatest Test batsmen ever in the pre-90’s era was a typical Mumbai batsman groomed to play long Test innings. His emphasis was always high on making his wicket the most prized one for the opposition, a habit which he developed competing in the famous club battles of Mumbai. One of the most famous centuries came in 1981 versus England at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium Bengaluru, where he smashed 172 while consuming 472 deliveries. He batted at a snail-paced strike rate of just 36.44 which made the English bowler feel sorry about their ability to get him out. Scoring a century and playing big knocks became his identity. A testament to this fact is that at the time he retired, he held the record for the most number of centuries in Test cricket, finishing with 34 tons – surpassing Sir Don Bradman’s 29.
