Virat Kohli on January 8,2015 scored the most number of runs by an Indian batsman in a home or an away Test series against Australia. He surpassed Rahul Dravid’s record of 619 runs in the 2003-04 series in Australia which India drew (1-1) and retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy that they won at home in 2000-01.

Kohli achieved this feat in the ongoing fourth Test at Sydney. When he came out to bat, Kohli needed 121 runs more to break Dravid’s record. He continued his good form that he showed during the series and not only he brought up his fourth hundred of the series, but also remained unbeaten on 140 and broke Dravid’s record.

In the 2003-04 series, Dravid achieved this feat and also scored a double century in the Adelaide Test, which out of nowhere, India won by 4 wickets. At one stage, India were 85/4 in reply to Australia’s mammoth total of 556 and were in the danger of follow-on. But Dravid’s double century and Laxman’s 150 guided India to 523 in their first innings. Ajit Agarkar took 6 wickets in the second innings and reduced Australia to 196. India needed 230 runs and Dravid played patiently to guide his team to victory. Dravid also scored three fifties during the series.

The other Indian batsmen to achieve this feat are Gundappa Viswanath and VVS Laxman (2 times).
