Before there was a T20 format, the most competitive format of cricket was the 50 over ODI format as spectators could see a complete game of cricket in just one day. The ODI matches were exciting compared to the longer format of Test cricket as more runs were scored in less number of overs, more wickets fell and the audience could see fours and sixes in quick successions.
The people who made ODIs more entertaining were the batsmen by striking more number of sixes and fours. With the birth of T20 format in cricket, hitting sixes has now become a regular activity but then it was considered to be a novelty.
