Statistical analysis: Flop XI of IPL 2016

This season of IPL has been no different from the past editions. While some players have performed extremely well, some of the other players’ performances have been an unmitigated disaster. So we have decided to build a flop XI; a bunch of players whose performances have been underwhelming, players who didn’t live up to the expectations, and players who have proved that they were just utter waste of the big money splashed out on them.

But just keep in mind, there is no intention to hurt or demean the players or their fans who are on this list.

To honor the spirit of IPL, we have picked up a team with four foreign players. We have opted for two openers, 3 middle order batsmen, a wicket-keeper batsman, 2 fast bowlers, a spinner, a batting all-rounder who can bowl medium pace, and a bowling all-rounder, who bowls left-arm spin and is a hard hitter coming lower down the order. What’s more, we even have a legendary captain in the team.

Shreyas Iyer: Delhi-Daredevils-batsman-Shreyas-Iyer-in-action223Matches: 6, Runs: 30

Frankly speaking, pretty big things we were expecting from this 21-year old batsman. He was roped in for a staggering 2.6 Crores by Delhi Daredevils in the 2015 IPL auction, and he didn’t disappoint that season. Iyer rightly won the ‘Emerging Player of the Tournament’ award in IPL 2015, before enjoying a grand Ranji Trophy season, where he notched 1321 runs at an average of 73.39; only the second player to score 1300 runs in a single season in Ranji cricket’s long history.

He was like one successful IPL campaign away from a berth in the Indian Team. What followed though was a complete nightmare. A total of 30 runs at an average of only 5. These are shocking numbers by any means. As a result, he didn’t get a call from the selectors for either the Tests in West Indies or the ODI’s in Zimbabwe. He would be pulling his hair in frustration as majority of the 1st choice players being rested.

Chris Gaylegayle-story_647_041816115206

Matches: 10, Run: 227

The T20 giant to some extent sleepwalked through the early stages of this edition, with five back to back single-digit scores, and was subsequently dropped. But Chris Gayle burst to life with two impressive half-centuries against Punjab and Sunrisers, unfortunately that latter innings could not prevent Royal Challengers Bangalore from losing their third IPL final. Gayle ended this year’s IPL with 227 runs in 10 games at 22.70.

David Miller:David-Miller-IPL-AFP-380

Matches: 14, Runs: 161

Miller was bought for a whopping 6 Crores by Kings XI Punjab in the 2013 IPL and from the very begining he started to make some stunning impact. He scored 101* off 38 balls, the 3rd fastest IPL century, to leave RCB tattered. He enjoyed a terrific season in 2014 and guided KXI Punjab reach the Final. Ahead of this season, he was rightly announced as KXI Punjab’s Captain. Naturally, the expectations were high. What followed, though, was to be fair an absolute anti-climax. KXI lost 5 out of their opening 6 matches. Miller’s contribution was 76 runs at an average of 12.67 before Vijay, eventually, replaced Miller as the Captain.

Deepak Hooda:CgZV9XjWEAEo9c4

Matches: 17, Runs: 144

Deepak Hooda is often called ‘Hurricane’ in domestic circuit as he had a habit of changing a game in no time. Sunrisers Hyderabad may be believed in that nickname as they bought him for Rs 4.2 Crores. The enormous faith and belief in him resulted in such a way that they played him match after match, despite repeated failures. And this is how Hooda decided to repay the team management faith: 144 runs at an average of 10.28. But please don’t forget his contribution as a bowler, Hooda bowls too. He has grabbed a total of 3 wickets from 17 matches this season!
Kane Williamson:Sunrisers-Hyderabad-SRH-players-Shikhar-Dhawan-and-Kane-Williamson6

Matches: 6, Runs: 124

Kane Williamson generally gives class and consistency a remarkable combination. He was expected to be Sun Riser’s batting mainstay. But it turned out a wrong one. Williamson was injured for the initial part of the competition and SRH were desperate for him to recover. When he finally did recover and came in like rising sun for Hyderabad, his performances were you may say underwhelming at best. 124 runs at 20.66 for a player of Williamson’s caliber is completely disappointing.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni:fbffcb6f4e2360fc116aa37c951a8245

Matches: 14, Runs: 284

284 runs at an average of 40, strike-rate 135. displaying an exceptional heist by hitting 23 runs in the last over with 2 powerful sixes off the last 2 balls. Then why is he in this team? This is MS Dhoni we are speaking. A towering giant in IPL. He has, in fact, done it all. He has led Chennai Super Kings to 2 IPL titles and 2 Champions League titles. So when a team captained by Dhoni finishes second from the bottom, it’s for sure he didn’t live up to his expectations. Apart from the last league encounter, Dhoni looked totally clueless throughout the tournament.  He looked lost in the wilderness without Chennai Super Kings. His struggle for existence was best displayed by a pathetic 8 off 22 balls against Kolkata Knight Riders.

Pawan Negi:Pawan-Negi-is-an-exciting-prospect

Matches: 8, Runs: 57, Wickets: 1, Bowling Average: 84

Flop, debacle, disaster, catastrophe, dud, lemon – you cannot actually describe Pawan Negi’s extent this season with any of these words. When Negi was bought for an unexpected figure of 8.5 Crores, many predicted this wasn’t to end well and it most outrageously did not! He has managed to put in only 57 runs and taken 1 wicket—all this after Delhi signed him for 8.5 Crores. Literally, if we could have had 11 Pawan Negi in this exclusive team, we would have been feeling great.

Hardik Pandya:15pandya1

Matches: 11, Runs: 44, Wickets: 3, Bowling Average: 51

Exuberance and flamboyance always follow Hardik Pandya. He was believed to be the next big thing in Indian cricket. Well, at least, that is what he thinks. An all-rounder who can hit big and bowl at 140plus – he looked every captain’s automatic choice. 2016 has already been so much kind to Pandya; not only his debut for India, but also played in the World T20. From being an unknown domestic struggler, he became a household name within a few months. The expectations were high as always have been in this country. But his performances were just pathetic. 44 runs at an average of 6.28! You have to call him a phenomenal flop. The bowling not much better either; he bagged only 3 wickets at an average of 51.

Harbhajan Singh:MI-bowler-Harbhajan-Singh-during-the-match-between-Sunrisers-Hyderabad-and-Mumbai-Indians-at-Wankhede-Stadium-Mumbai

Matches: 14, Wickets: 9, Bowling Average: 43.55

We all know that Ashwin had a nightmarish season. Except, Harbhajan had to endure an even worse campaign, this season he has been most disappointing. Playing all the 14 matches, he has managed to pick up only 9 wickets at a poor average of 43.55. There is more to add, he conceded more than 8 runs an over. This numbers are not at all worthy of a spinner of his calibre.

Varun Aaron:virat-kohli-varun-aaron-rcb-ipl-2016-

Matches: 8, Wickets: 2, Bowling Average: 113.5, Economy Rate: 9.59

Aaron is a dangerous bowler and is a true match-winner; he is dangerous for his team and wins matches for his opponents. Please add a pinch of salt before you repeat these words! He played 8 matches this season, picked up all of 2 wickets at an outstanding average of 113.5 and economy rate of 9.59.

We all love Varun Aaron, we mean it.

Mitchel Johnson18mitchell_johnson

Matches: 3, Wickets: 2, Bowling Average: 2.50 , Economy Rate: 9.63

Johnson’s short balls didn’t rear up and were easily put away. He picked up two wickets in three matches at an economy rate of 9.63 before being forced to sit in the sidelines.

IPL 2016 FLOP XI

Openers: Shreyas Iyer & Chris Gayle; Middle Order: David Miller, Deepak Hooda, Kane Williamson; Wicket Keeper & Captain: MS Dhoni; All-Rounders: Pawan Negi & Hardik Pandya; Bowlers: Harbhajan Singh,Varun Aaron and Mitchel Johnson
