Stats: Batsmen with highest average at batting positions 1 to 3 in ODI cricket

Mahendra Singh Dhoni today scored 23 off 9 balls in the third ODI of the five-match VB series against Australia Melbourne Cricket Ground.  Dhoni came to bat after the fall of Ajinkya Rahane, who scored 50 and built a 109 runs partnership with Virat Kohli, got few overs. So he started hitting from the beginning. His innings did not last long as he caught at the deep mid-wicket while trying to play two consecutive six off a short  delivery of John Hastings. Dhoni hit two sixes and two fours.

Dhoni is a clean hitter. He also earned the fame as one of the best finishers of the world batting lower down the order. In 2011 World Cup final, Dhoni from the difficult situation held his nerve to win India the final with 91 run innings. He hit a helicopter shot over the long on boundary rope to finish off the match.

More recently during the Gandhi-Mandela ODI series against South Africa entire top order miserably falls to the brilliance of South African bowling in Indore ODI captain MS Dhoni shouldered the responsibility of the team and scored unbeaten 92 with seven fours and four sixes. Dhoni’s Houdini act helped India to score 248 and eventually win the match by 22 runs.

But, there are allegations that Dhoni bats down the order because he wants to maintain his 50 plus average. But, when Dhoni used to bat at top order (1-3) his average is batter than his career average 51.81.

Dhoni in the fifth match of his career was elevated to no. 3 by captain Sourav Ganguly against Pakistan in Visakhapatnam. The wicketkeeper-batsman murdered Pakistani bowlers with a blitzkrieg 148 runs. So, before he became a captain he batted as a top order batsman in 19 innings. In those matches, his average was 77 plus.

His batting average proves if he wants to achieve milestones he could bat at the top order, but he took the responsibility of a finisher, and in his entire career he has won India many remarkable matches.
