Milestones are key for any batsman as batters always eye centuries, double centuries, triple centuries and so on. However, sometimes the script does not go as expected and they lose their nerve in that tense moment as they miss a huge opportunity to score the milestone run.
Often we see players get out on 99 and hence miss their century, ultimately the 99 only counts as a half century in the stats. So is the case with 199 or 299 as they are looked with lesser prominence when a player’s career is viewed upon.
Here we look at the list of players who got out on 199 in a long 140-year history.
#1. Mudassar Nazar
The first player ever to get dismissed on 199 was Pakistan’s Mudassar Nazar who missed the opportunity while playing against India at Faisalabad in 1984.
#2. Mohammad Azharuddin
India’s Mohammad Azharuddin is the next to fall for 199 two years later when India played against Sri Lanka in 1986.
#3. M Elliott
The next unlucky batsman was Australia’s Elliott who single-handedly led Australia’s batting against England in 1997 Ashes series in England but has failed to convert his massive innings into a double hundred.
#4. Sanath Jayasuriya
Days after Elliott got out for 199 in England, Sanath Jayasuriya had also suffered a similar fate when Sri Lanka played against India at Colombo in August 1999.
#5. Steve Waugh
Australian captain Steve Waugh has also failed to escape the 199 puzzle as he succumbed to the pressure when Australia met West Indies at Bridgetown in 1999.
#6. Younis Khan
Pakistan’s Test specialist Younis Khan, who was in the form of his life during 2006, also couldn’t manage a 200 despite his stellar form that year as he was dismissed for 199 against India at Lahore.
#7. Ian Bell
The only English player in the list, Ian Bell was out for 199 against West Indies when both the teams met in iconic Lords in 2008.
#8. Steve Smith
One of the latest to succumb to the pressure of being at 199 was Australian captain Steve Smith. The elegant batsman has taken the Australian innings in his hands as he scored 199 out of the 399 posted by the visiting side at Jamaica in 2015.
#9. KL Rahul
Indian batsman KL Rahul is the last on the list as the right hander lost his cool and popped the ball to cover in search of a run to reach his maiden double hundred.
However, this would be a good learning curve for the youngster as he looks a bright prospect for India in coming years.
