The record for the most runs by an Indian batsman in a calendar year is currently held by Rahul Dravid. Dravid scored a totla of 2626 runs in 1999 but is in the sixth spot in the all-time list. The former Indian captain had averaged 46.89 in 53 matches back in 1999 which was extraordinary. That record stood for four more years before Australian legend Ricky Ponting broke it in 2003. Dravid’s tally has been overtaken four more times since then leaving Rahul at the sixth position in the list.
As far as Indians are concerned one of India’s most decorated captain Sourav Ganguly stands second on the list with 2580 runs in the same year with Sachin Tendulkar just behind him. Kohli’s century on the third day which he later on converted into a double ton helped him reach the fourth spot on the list with an average of almost 90 which is more than anyone on the list.
In the top ten Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli feature twice in the list the other two players being Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir. One thing to be noticed in the list of most runs scored by Indian batsmen in a calendar year is the domination of the batters who batted in the top four. Although Ganguly did not bat in the top four in Test matches he used to open in the shorter version of the game which saw him score such huge amount of runs in 1999 and 2007.
