India came agonisingly close to winning a Test series in Australia for the first time in their history when they scored 705 runs in the first innings of the last Test of Border-Gavaskar series in 2004. Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman were the architects of that huge score. They shared a mammoth partnership of 353 runs that helped India to register their highest score in Tests. Sachin Tendulkar scored 241 while Laxman scored 178.

Chasing an improbable target of 443, Australia was in a spot of bother after being reduced to 196 for 4 but a fighting knock of 80 runs from Steve Waugh and 77 from Simon Katich helped the hosts to save the match.
