Stats: Virat Kohli Fastest Player To Reach 8000 ODI Runs

Playing international cricket is considered as an achievement by many onlookers. But scoring 8000 ODI runs and that too becoming the fastest players to achieve the feat means the names will be engraved in the history of the game.

Thousands of players have so far played ODI cricket but only a handful have reached the monumental milestone in their careers.

Here we look at the top 10 players who managed to achieve 8000 ODI runs faster than their compatriots.

#10. Chris Gayle- 221 Innings

The gigantic West Indies player was not a mere phenomenon in T20 Cricket but have held many records in ODI cricket as well. Chris Gayle was one of the greatest players to grace West Indies Cricket in their glorious history and have won many games on his own.

The big Jamaican had reached the 8000 ODI run mark in his 221st innings against Bangladesh in 2011.

#9. Ricky Ponting- 220 Innings

The legendary Australian cricketer, Ricky Ponting is once in a generation player as he can be considered as the greatest batsman who had minimal effect with the captaincy.

He has never shown the effect of the burden of leading the side in his batting. He scored his 8000th run in his 220th innings against England in 2005.

#8. Desmond Haynes- 219 Innings

Desmond Haynes is one of the greatest ODI openers of all time as he redefined the way openers have batted during his days in the 1980s.

He had a stellar career that lasted for over two decades. He reached the milestone in just 219 ODI innings and had achieved the feat against Pakistan in 1993.

#7. Saeed Anwar- 218 Innings

Saeed Anwar was a devastating batsman for Pakistan at the top of the order as he literally murdered any bowling lineup on his day.

His aggressive batting style meant he finished as one of the best run-getters in Pakistan history. The elegant left-handed player had reached the milestone in just 218 innings.

One of the best wicketkeepers of all time, MS Dhoni is a great finisher as well for India over the past decade. The 35-year old is also one of the modern greats with his bat alone.

The most successful Indian skipper, Dhoni has managed to reach the 8000 ODI mark in just 214 innings. He reached the milestone in the game against New Zealand in 2014.

#5. Brian Lara- 211 Innings

Arguably, the greatest player in West Indies history, Brian Lara is one of the complete players. Lara was an extraordinary player in both Tests and ODIs and has single handedly carried West Indies cricket during the late 1990s and 2000s.

Brian Lara had reached 8000 ODI runs in 211 innings and achieved the feat against Australia in 2003.

#4. Sachin Tendulkar- 210 Innings

The greatest ODI player of all time, Sachin Tendulkar had managed to break every possible record during his playing days. The legendary master blaster took 210 innings to reach 8000 ODI runs.

He managed to score another 10000 ODI runs by the time he called retirement in 2012 and he is still way ahead of everyone in both ODIs and Tests.

#3. Sourav Ganguly- 200 Innings

The greatest Indian captain of all time, Sourav Ganguly, was one of the best players in the world cricket during his playing days. The legendary left-hander had formed a perfect partnership with the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag at the top and piled up runs for the country at ease.

He had scored 8000 ODI runs in 200 innings and achieved it against West Indies in 2002.

#2. AB de Villiers- 182 innings

One of the most complete players in the game of cricket, AB de Villiers talent has been immense in the modern game as he is the only player who could play all three formats based on the situation and different styles.

The South African skipper was the fastest to reach 8000 ODI runs till 2017 as he piled up runs at No.4 for the Proteas. He took only 182 innings to reach the feat.

#1. Virat Kohli- 175 innings

The Indian skipper has managed to reach the 8000 ODI run mark in the game against Bangladesh in the semifinal of ICC Champions Trophy 2017.

In the process, he became the fastest to reach the milestone and helped India qualify for the finals. He has scored 96* and is only looking to break more records in the coming years.
