Steve O’Keefe Names The Indian Who Was Behind His Success At Pune Test
Australian spinner Steve O’Keefe has hit the headlines after his incredible spell of bowling in the first test against India at Pune as he led the visitors to an eye perfect start.
The Aussies have won the game comfortably by 333 runs as the test has lasted just about two and half days and the 12-wicket haul by O’Keefe has meant India were bundled out for less than 110 in each of their innings in the test match.
However, the 32-year old who has hardly represented Australia in Tests prior to the series, has credited former Indian player Sridharan Sriram who was appointed as a bowling consultant to the team ahead of the tour.
“I think Sri is an excellent spin bowling coach. I’ve worked with him a couple of times now and he’s really impressive. He gets it, he understands how to bowl in these conditions, he understands what the batters are thinking”.
Sriram has played for India in 8 ODIs from 2000 to 2004 and has also represented Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Daredevils in IPL earlier. He was first appointed in a similar role when Australia visited Bangladesh in 2015 and was once again recalled to help the spinners for the tricky tour in India which Australia had found it difficult over the past decade.
The 41-year old has worked his way with O’Keefe as the left arm spinner has enhanced his bowling by trying different angles and seam positions ahead of the tour. The result was quite evident as he ran through Indian batting in both the innings handing the hosts one of their worst home defeats in their history.
Having run through the best batting lineup in the world at the moment, O’Keefe would be raring to go in the second test as the next match will be played at Bengaluru. He has been the major positive for the visitors in the first test and is looking to play a huge role in the ongoing test series despite only having played four tests for Australia prior to the start of the series.
