Steve Waugh’s Statement Proud Moment For Me And My Family: Ravichandran Ashwin

Ace off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who is bracing-up for the upcoming four-match Test series against Australia, has said it means a lot for a player like him to be termed as the “Bradman of bowling” by Australian legend Steve Waugh.

“For the media, it’s a great headline to grab. For me as an individual who wanted to play one Test for India, it does mean a lot as well, more so because it’s coming from Waugh – somebody who changed Australian cricket with the way he led and played the game,” Ashwin said while speaking to Times of India.

Banking on the offie’s impressive record at home, Ashwin was praised by Waugh after he set the record to become the fastest to reach 250 wickets in 45 Tests, when he picked the wicket of Bangladesh skipper and wicket-keeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahim in the one-off Test at Hyderabad.

The 51-year-old Waugh showered praise on the offie during the Laureus Sports Awards in Monaco last week before discussing his stellar performances at home.

“Even though it’s a proud moment for me, I don’t live over it or eat my lunch or breakfast over it,” Ashwin added.

The spin-bowler has played a significant role for India, particularly in Test format under the leadership of the 28-year-old Virat Kohli. India haven’t lost any of their last 19 Tests and Tamil Nadu-born spinner would aim to give his best against Australia on the spin-friendly wickets during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

“But I feel happy for my parents – especially my dad – reading such statements in the newspaper. It is a huge thing for him and I can see it in his eyes,” Ashwin further said.

As the first Test will be held in Pune on February 23, Ashwin would like to stat where from he has left in the One-off Test against Bangladesh.

Ashwin, who made his Test debut against the West Indies in 2011, has played 45 Tests so far in which he has bagged 254 wickets at an average of 25.04 with 24 five-wicket hauls.
